Finally winter

has come to Michigan. One of the reasons we enjoy Michigan is the four distinct seasons.

The first couple months of winter were atypical--10 degrees above normal, precipitation as rain if any, overcast making days dreary. In the last week our weather has returned to normal for late January--temperatures from single digits to mid-20s, snow at times that has finally accumulated to 6 or so inches on the ground, sunny and clear days mixed with occasional overcast.

Winter and snow means cross country skiing--our first of the season. With near-perfect conditions of sun and mid-20s temperatures, the snow crunched beneath the skis providing ample traction going uphill and adequate compression for downhill slides. Skiing requires using muscles in addition to ones normally used so later in the day a dull soreness set in reminding us to take it easy in our initial skiing periods.

The next week will continue with cold, sunny weather. Will get out for additional skiing sessions, hopefully on some trails so we can have views of different surroundings.

Our first geocaching travel bug

We are geocachers. Some geocachers create a cache, hide it, determine its coordinate location, and post the coordinates and a short description on the internet. We try to find these hidden treasures using our GPS receiver to tell us our location and point us in the direction of the cache.

Various items are placed in caches for trading--small toys are popular with with kids. One such item is called a travel bug, an item that cachers are to move from one cache to another according to some goal defined by the owner of the travel bug.

Unite for Diabetes, an organization trying to raise awarness about diabetes, is supplying a special travel bug to interested Geocaching.com members--20,000 were/are being distributed. We think the effort of making people aware of diabetes is important since so many of our family and friends have it. The campaign is described at http://unite.geocaching.com.

We registered and received our tb named "Indergarh, India" and with tracking number TB1BWYT. (Use the name and number to track the tb at geocaching.com.) The goal of our tb is to reach Indergarh, India to make people there aware of diabetes. We placed it in a cache at Wolcott Mill Metropark near Romeo, MI. It was extracted from our placement within a couple weeks, and less than two weeks later has traveled to Washington state. Now to have someone grab it from there and take it onward toward Indergarh, India.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra...

Pops Concert last night was exceptional. Theme was big band music from the 1930s-40s with a few extras thrown in. To make it more speciaa, some of our favorite DSO musicians had featured solos on sax, trumpet, and trombone.

Interesting that we know names of DSO musicians like we know names of Detroit Tigers baseball players and Detroit Pistons basketball players!
And the musicians are not telecast like the sports players are. Does that matter? Of course it does--talk to your friends who know names of professional poker players and ask where they learned those names. But I digress...

I attribute my love of swing and big band style music to my early years--my mom and dad must have put me to sleep with that music playing on the radio. Later I collected albums, the LP vinyl disc variety, of the big bands--Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller, Glen Grey were a few.

I left those albums at home when I moved out on my own thinking that I could grab them whenever I wanted. When I was ready to retrieve them, they were almost all gone, probably given away after my mother remarried. My bad. But maybe a blessing in disguise. With the sound quality of digital recordings superior to analog on vinyl, my current collection of replacement CDs gives greater enjoyment. Now to listen to the my new Benny Goodman....
